Back up all your current characters and copy paste save their SVB files over to a safe outside folder.
That way your v.7 characters can be used with your friend and not get in the way of your v.8 characters.
Also make an outside backup folder for your v.7 characters so they can be pulled in and out along with the v.8 characters.
Also make sure to move your v.8 of Variant mod because the game will register both versions as the same if they both exist in the mod folder the game uses.
