[Music mod] RIMM Reworked

Description
Breathe new life into your submarine with playable instruments, note sheets, cassette tapes, and over 50 unlockable songs.
Forget the boring five second loops of the vanilla instruments, this is real music!

This mod greatly upgrades the vanilla music instruments (and adds some new ones) to play a much wider selection of better music, and it allows you to choose which music to play using a note sheet slot in every instrument. Note sheets can be found while playing. Can you collect all the songs?

Works in multiplayer. Works with the vanilla system of talents.

Main Features
  • A fresh selection of over 50 music tracks
  • Pick which music to play from unlockable note sheets you can find while playing!
  • Crisp and audible music quality thanks to an efficient compression algorithm
  • A runtime loading system ensures the music won't increase your loading times or lag the game at all!
  • New items matching the vanilla artstyle
  • New Cassette Player (Radio), which plays music from cassettes even when dropped on the ground
  • Note sheets for each instrument are distinguishable by colour. Same for each cassette tape.

Available Instruments
  • Harmonica (7 songs)
  • Accordion (14 songs)
  • Guitar (15 songs)
  • Chorus Book (8 songs)
  • Cassette Player (13 songs + 1 extra)

You can purchase or find music and instruments at Cities and Habitation outposts, or loot rare music from wrecks. Each outpost has only a limited selection of music available for purchase.

Feedback
I'll try to fix any issues you post about in the comments.
New music requests are welcome.

This is a rework/improvement of the Reworked Instrumental Music Mod which itself is a rework of another mod.

FAQ and troubleshooting
The music is too loud / too quiet! Can I adjust the volume?

TLDR: No, due to game limitations.
Unfortunately you cannot adjust the volume of the songs. Due to limitations in Barotrauma's code, the music from this mod is actually classified as "sound effects" and therefore it cannot be adjusted separately from other sounds in the game. All the songs in the mod have normalised volume so they don't drown out the rest of the ingame sounds. There's nothing more I can do about this, sorry!

The music stays loud even when I'm on the other side of the sub! Can you fix this?

TLDR: No, due to game limitations.
That's unfortunately another limitation of Barotrauma's sound engine. Ingame sounds can either be Mono (one channel) or Stereo (two channels, one for each ear).
If a sound is in Mono, Barotrauma will process it with distance attentuation and spatial panning. The drawback? You will only ever hear the sound in one ear, depending on whether it's coming from your left or your right. I don't know about you, but I don't enjoy listening to loud music in one ear and submarine ambience in the other.
That's why all songs in RIMM Reworked are Stereo, which plays the song in both ears but also disables distance attentuation. There is no in-between, unfortunately.

Where do I get songs / music sheets?

You can buy them at city outposts (the big ones), or loot them from wrecks on missions. For the more unscrupulous crewmember, they can also be stolen from sleeping quarter drawers on all kinds of outposts :)

Can I add my own songs?

Of course! There is a wonderful guide on Github[github.com] by Garnet that will help you through making a custom addon for RIMM Reworked! If you make an addon, you can also share it here and I will add it to the official list of RIMM addons!

@mylapqn312 Thank you, that response is awesome. I've decided to keep them as chorus book songs, just to give the chorus book a few more options. can be found on my workshop

Thank you for the mod.

TLDR: covers are mostly note sheets, originals are mostly cassettes, but you can do whatever you like.

@Newdly - this is an interesting one, sorry for the long reply :D

My philosophy has always been to try and separate the voice from the instrument as much as possible, even using software.
But if that's not possible, focus on what's the context of the song:

if it's an "amateur cover" or a song that people would actually sing casually, it goes in the chorus book even if it's not "pure".

Same for instruments - a song that you could fully enjoy with just a guitar, for example, goes in the guitar even if there's a bit of percussion in the background. Again, I would always try to find an "amateur cover" played on just that instrument.

If it's the actual original recording from the artist, or a more complex rendition that you would mostly hear on the radio, it goes on a cassette.

But in any case, this is just what I use to determine what the official mod's song notes are gonna be - you can put it anywhere you want in your mod :D

@Snubby @mylapqn312

Chorus book songs that are mostly vocals but also have a single instrument in the background;
should i make them cassettes instead? What do you think?
Snubby Nov 6 @ 10:27am
If your songs are already in .OGG then no, that step is not necessary, although it is recommended for filesize compression ; Barotrauma does not do well with heavy mods.

And that contentpackage should wrap all but the first line of that XML (which should be named filelist.xml, maybe Barotrauma renamed it in an update ?), so you can't miss it.

if my songs are all ready in ogg format do i still gotta run the "./ffmpeg.exe -y -i out.ogg -c:a libvorbis -ab 32k -ar 11025 radio-out.ogg" command? also the guide says to write "<Item file="%ModDir%/PATHTOYOURFILE.xml" inside of "<contentpackage></contentpackage>" in the files.xml but how do i know where "<contentpackage></contentpackage>" is inside of that xml?
Cool_D Nov 6 @ 9:58am
We need a Youtube video on how to do this.
