If it is after some time, it is a vanilla mechanic, but my mod spawns predators at the nearest map edge to their prey, so they usually eat something easier before attempting to eat another predator.
If it is as soon as they spawn, maybe the path cost to reach the prey was too high for the predators right after spawning. Try disabling the option 'Hungry Predators' to let them roam a bit before getting hungry and that should prevent this from happening :)
You got me thinking now it maybe might be related to the eating rotting corpse mod! Thanks!

@jagdpenguin That’s also a nice idea, but unfortunately it’s not something I can include in this mod. I’ll look into it separately though.
Thanks for sharing your ideas!
Like if there's 10 boars = Spawn predators
And/Or if there's 30 total animals = spawn predators
I'm not sure what you mean: The mod is updated to the latest Rimworld version.
Did you subscribe to mods that allow predators to hunt boom creatures (such as boomalopes)?
The default settings for my mod are 10 prey animals from the same species on the map, so if there are 10+ boomaloopes on the map, predators will start to spawn to hunt them, but they usually do not hunt creatures that explode by default (except if desperate, if I'm not mistaken), hence you need another mod to handle this, as seem in the mod description above.
Also, since the predator needs to be bigger than its prey, I'm not sure if there is anything in the vanilla game capable of hunting bigger animals such as Elephants, but since they reproduce veeeery slowly, this shouldn't become a problem. I believe T-Rexes from some dinosaur mods can hunt Elephants though.
My mod only spawns valid predators: if none is found, none is spawned.
I currently have 5 bears just chilling right outside my base door right now. While the Gorillas, Elephants, Boomalopes, and Beavers keep expanding their populations. I am wondering if has something to do with Biome Transitions and Tropical Jungles as this is the first time since using this mod to have Tropical Jungles on my map.
The cats thing was really just an example. As it turns out my mistake was not realizing that disconnected zones, in this case Home, can still be pathed to each other. So for example, the cat would wander to the geothermal generator outside the base that is still in "home". I just need to design zones with that in mind.
Yeah, adjusting predator targeting would definitely be outside the scope of this mod: it’d need to be its own thing. But I have to ask: why are your adventurous cats wandering so far from the base? 😄
What I usually do is set up a safe zone that stays within the base perimeter and assign all my more fragile pets to it. That tends to keep them out of trouble!
One mod that might help is Predators Unleashed. It tweaks predator behavior so they down prey and haul it back to their lair instead of instantly killing it, which gives you a window to rescue your beloved pet before it’s too late.
Hope it helps, cheers!
Any chance to adjust the odds of predators targeting colony animals? I swear these guys prefer to snipe my cat 80% of the map away over the things the are "meant" to hunt. That's obviously not a you issue and more of base game issue though haha
Wild Reproduction . Even though it doesn't say 1.5, it works fine without issues.
RimKeeper - Wild Animal Procreation is another one.
Predators also avoid prey that are larger than themselves, except when they're desperate.
I can safely say this mod has nothing to do with your mares becoming pregnant: The code doesn't touch anything related to that at all, haha
@emihead I just released a new version with the feature you suggested, please let me know if you find any issues :)
You can temporarily disable the 'Hungry Predators' option in the mod settings to prevent this from happening.
I'm coding a better algorithm for the game to select the location predators spawn, so they spawn closer to their designated prey, this will fix this issue permanently.
Is there any error being generated on your debug console?
