Your controller vibrates harder the further it is from the correct position, it makes it feel stiff, but you it gets more gentle vibrations the closer it is to the correct position.
It lets you actually "feel" your way through picking the lock. It's actually one of the most immersive things in the game imo.
However, it's also the best example imo of a mechanic that's amazing for console, but absolutely horrible for PC.
Oblivion's lockpicking minigame wasn't great sometimes, but at least it was ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ down to the player's competence at completing it, unlike what it is in Skyrim FO since 3.
