MARC II cars are railcars built by Nippon Sharyo for the Maryland Mass Transit Administration (now MDOT-MTA). Delivered in two main production groups (commonly referred to as II-A and II-B), they were based on the same general body platform Nippon Sharyo supplied for several U.S. commuter agencies during the 1980s and early 1990s. MARC II cars formed the backbone of MARC’s push-pull fleet prior to the arrival of the Kawasaki-built MARC III cars.

The II-A cars (mid-1980s) were the first batch and share the original body and interior layout. The later II-B cars (early 1990s) introduced updated interior finishes, modified ADA arrangements, and revised HVAC/electrical systems but remained fully compatible with the earlier cars. Both groups were delivered as trailers and cab cars. Some trailers were built or later modified with onboard restrooms; others were delivered without.

The II-A cars have been retired by MARC outside of handful that have been converted to Bike Coaches. All II-A Cabs have been retired though not scrapped.
