EK2 Songs of the Return is a total conversion submod for Elder Kings 2, introducing an entirely new historical timeline set in the Merethic Era, the era of myth, elves, and the dawn of human civilization in Tamriel.

Set in the year ME 476, long before the events of any Elder Scrolls title, the mod lets players explore an age when Elven civilizations flourished across Tamriel. Take command of early Tamrielic kingdoms, clans, or tribes and create your own legends that would echo through the ages.

New Bookmarks 

Songs of the Return introduces a range of new bookmarks set during the Merethic Era, each depicting a different corner of Tamriel’s mythic past. The "Endless Crossroads" Bookmark requires the Roads to Power DLC.

New Cultures

Songs of the Return introduces dozens of new cultures that reflect the earliest divisions among Elves, Men, and Beastfolk during the Merethic Era. Among the cultures featured are:

  • Faun – The Fauns are the native inhabitants the lush archipelago of the Systres Isles and parts of Tamriel at some point in the past.
  • Sinestral Elf – Depicting the Elven natives of Yokuda who are stuck in a bitter struggle with the men of Yokuda.
  • Desert Orc – Depicting the fierce inhabitants of the unforgiving deserts of ancient Hammerfell.
  • Sea Giant – The elusive colossal beings who dwell along the misty shores and oceans of Nirn.
  • Chimeri versions of Dunmeri Cultures – Featuring the Chimeri ancestors to the Dunmeri Cultures found in the Elder Kings.

New Clothing

Songs of the Return introduces a vast array of new headgears and attires that might reflect the ancient cultures of the Merethic Era.

New Artifacts

Songs of the Return expands the world with an enormous collection of relics, heirlooms, and mythical weapons. Over 800 new artifacts can be discovered or claimed, from ancient Ayleid staves to Atmoran axes and Dwemer marvels, every corner of Tamriel holds a story waiting to be unearthed.

New Illustrations

To enrich immersion,the Submod features new background illustrations for various characters and realms. From the radiant thrones of Ayleid Sorcerer-Kings to the shadowed courts of Vampire Lords, from the gleaming halls of the Altmer Kinlords to other Kings across Tamriel.

New Decisions

Songs of the Return introduces powerful new realm-shaping decisions that let rulers forge destiny across the Merethic world.

New Game Rules

New rules include:
  • Limited Interracial Marriage – When enabled (default), this racist game rule restricts AI characters to marrying only others of the same heritage. AI with the pure-blooded trait will only marry other pure-blooded characters of the same heritage. Player characters are unaffected and can freely marry across cultures and bloodlines.
  • Dragon Priest Invasion – When enabled (default), Dragon Priests will invade Tamriel at some point in the future.
  • Alinor Isolationism – When enabled, Alinor begins the game in the Closed Phase, representing its isolation from the rest of Tamriel. When disabled, Alinor starts in the Open Phase, allowing diplomacy and warfare beyond the Summerset Isles.
  • Alinor Suzerain(requires the Khans of the Steppe DLC). When enabled, the High Kingdom of Alinor becomes the Suzerain of the Imperatum Saliache, establishing a tributary relationship where Cyrodiil pays regular tribute to Alinor.

New Lifestyles

Songs of the Return introduces three new Lifestyles, each offering unique perk trees, traits, and progression paths that redefine how characters grow in power and shape their legacy across Tamriel. The new Lifestyles are:

  • Vampire Lifestyle – Master a variety of dark gifts that binds blood and immortality.
  • Werewolf Lifestyle – Embrace the curse of the Hircine and unleash your fury as an apex predator.
  • Sword-Singer Lifestyle – Walk the sacred Way of the Sword. Through devotion and mastery, manifest the Shehai and become a Saint of the Sword.

New Coven & Pack System

Songs of the Return introduces a dynamic Coven and Pack Trait System, featuring unique Vampire & Werewolf traits to discover and claim. Players can join these groups by seeking out their leaders and earning the right to become part of their ranks—whether through persuasion, loyalty, or bloodshed.

By aligning with a coven or pack, you gain access to unique modifiers. Ambitious players may even ascend further—becoming Vampire Lords or Werewolf Lords by asking it from those who already possess the trait.

New Struggle ( Fate of Iberia DLC Required )

Players who own the Fate of Iberia DLC can experience the Narfinsel Schism through the Struggle System. Navigate the rivalries of Ayleid factions, balance influence, and decide the fate of the Heartlands as competing sorcerer-kings clash for supremacy.



Is this mod compatible with other mods?
It's probably best to start this mod without any other except for EK2. The only confirmed compatible mod is Better Barbershop. Other mods, especially large conversions, UI/asset mods, or mods that touch the same files—are likely to cause conflicts. If you want to test compatibility, enable only this mod, then add other mods one at a time.

This mod is the best econversion for Ek2! My one and only wish would be to unlock Tech Era, without it it's hard to play for longer playthroughs.

For those experiencing problems with artifact graphics not showing up, keep two things in mind, 1, that is typically caused by having too many script heavy mods enabled, maybe try lightening up your load order, and 2, as silly as it sounds, also keep in mind that alot of these new weapon artifacts are quite thin and or blend with their background, so they might take more than just a glance to actually see.

@Hbxn: Sorry, I see now I worded my comment poorly. I do not mean development as in content (you guys have done great pretty much everywhere there), I mean more as in the development level of individual counties. Only a fraction have a county development level higher than zero, almost all in Alinor. If this is intended or just something that has not been done yet, then no worries, I was just wondering if it was unintended or a bug on my end.

Would note that at least for me, the Better Barbershop mod removes all artefact graphics. Unique equipment still shows up when worn by characters but the actual inventory images for them don't seem to be loading.

Though this might just be a me issue since no one else seems to have reported it.

Very good mod, two questions/problems though.
As a vampire, i can't pursue the mindweaver perk tree, is that normal ?
There is no Creature accolade ?

@Tertulian, I'd reccomend doing a legendary adventure or, just becoming an adventurer, wonder how viable it would be to found all the holds of Skyrim, then conquer eastmarch or something, and become High King

Hey thanks for the very cool mod I was hoping someone would make a merethic version. For the Sea giants I cant recruit more than one regiment. Sorry if this has been reported already

Hey, great mod. I was wondering if there were any plans to make it so that the game can naturally progress into the current era of EK? I basically "won" my playthrough in about 200 years, and I'm kinda sitting around because the innovations of the first era remain locked.
