gm_zhina - Explorable China Map (Map Files)

Parody map of China with full voice acting, police AI, missions, weapons, entities, and NPCs that make the city feel alive. There are tons of easter eggs, it might take you a while to see everything this map has to offer!

UPDATE AUGUST 2025:
Optimisation script is now active. It will hide NPCs too far away from the player, both server and clientside (saving FPS and Network activity). You can disable this by setting asa_optimiseall and asa_optimisenpcs to 0.

PLEASE SET IN VIDEO OPTIONS "Water Detail" to "Reflect World" - NEVER "Reflect all"

"Reflect all" has disgusting consequences on the framerate with hardly any benefit.

You need a really good PC to run this map properly. You can make it run better by opting into the 64-bit Garry's Mod beta, or by turning off pedestrians in the Options menu.

Set gmod_mcore_test 1 in console for better FPS.

Please also make sure that Multicore rendering is enabled in your graphics options!

I was totally new to modeling when I made this, so they might not be well optimised models either.

If you are playing from far away from the server, it will lag a lot. There's a lot of data transferred. zhina_peds 0 can alleviate it slightly. Aside from that, the map gameplay isn't very satisfactory if you play multiplayer with a play who lives far away.

iNPC - Artifical Intelligence Module Incompatibility

If you're using iNPC, then DISABLE "Unlimited Vision" in that addon or you'll get like 3fps on this map!
And NPC animations will break unless you use Untick "Enable adding NPCs to squad" in iNPC's Admin menu.

Utilities -> Admin -> Clean Up Everything
⇧This will fix most problems, especially in multiplayer.
You must clean-up map when a new player joins.

Q: How to activate entities/pick up food?
A: Double tap the E key on them.

Q: Animations are broken. Why?!
A: Please disable "Prone Mod", "Prone Mod Extensions", and other things that add animations, and then restart the game.

Q: Why is the file size so big?!?
A: Loads of custom assets. Also, you only need Garry's Mod to play this. No CSS/L4D2 required.

Q: Can I customise the map in X way?
A: If you want to alter the map and re-upload it (e.g., for a server), then you may, as long as you give credit.

Q: What's the objective of this map?
A: Nothing, really. Just have a good time with your friends, make money, start fights, etc.

Q: How do I use computer terminals or Miner PCs?
A: If you understand how to navigate Command Prompt in Windows, it should be easy. Otherwise, try typing 'help' to see if it becomes easier to understand.

A: Yes, and I encourage you to give credit.

- Sometimes the sound breaks. "zhina_musicareas 0" in console might make this less common.

Subtitles are server-sided, therefore you don't need to send the translated files to visitors of the server, however, there is currently no way to have multiple players on the server with different language subtitles.

Use zhina_language 'english' to any corresponding language to change language.

If you want to make subtitles:

1. Extract the Addon using Gmad and find the lua\zhina_subs\english.lua file and make a duplicate
2. Rename the duplicate file to the language you want to translate to
3. Translate the contents of the lua file. (the dialogues, don't touch filename)
4. On the server, do zhina_language <languagename> in console.
5. Upload to the workshop if desired. I recommend gmpublisher as it makes workshop publishing easy.
