It's not possible in Starbound, because the the game engine completely ignores any scripts you try to apply to the inventory interface. I had to make this work purely with JSON and using the hard-coded (C++) abilities of the inventory interface. I think the inventory was developed in the very early days, before they leaned heavily into using Lua. And for their purposes, it was good enough, so they never changed it. Much like the non-vanilla action bar hotkeys that get ignored.
It's different for object-based container mods, because those can be fully scripted - both the object, and the interface.
It MAY be possible with OpenStarbound, but I haven't experimented with it, or looked that deeply. And if it isn't possible yet, it could be made possible. But it DOES support automatically converting an older character to whatever inventory mod you are using, which Starbound does not.do.
