Any way to disable spell check in steams browser? (community, overlay)
I know about the settings toggle for chat, and an old trick editing UserPrefs.json- both things ive already did, and previously the UserPrefs trick worked fine within steams internal browser... but suddenly after some update it doesnt work anymore.

By browser i mean steams own internal browser- the one that render the store and community in the windows app, and in-game what renders the overlay in-game browser.

I use the overlay browser quite a lot, including answering to threads both on steam community and elsewhere... and now half of what i write is full of the annoying red underline. Im bi-lingual btw- so on top of dictionaries not recognizing slang, games names and terms half of the time its marking everything i write as wrong.

Anyone knows a fix, workaround anything? Its driving me mad!!

It seems that after the latest update, Steam no longer respects the changes made in UserPrefs.json to disable spell check in the internal browser. There's no official option to turn it off in the settings right now, and the usual methods no longer work. You might have to wait for a future update that brings this feature back, or look into workarounds like disabling spell check through Windows settings or using browser extensions in Steam if they ever become supported.
I have managed to get rid of the spell checker from Seam discussions for now.

Editing UserPrefs.json worked for years but after some update, Steam now ignores everything written in the spellcheck":{"dictionaries":[""]

Fine, you can still disable it. Go to folder
AppData\Local\Steam\htmlcache\Dictionaries
There was file with name like "xx-XX-3-0.bdic", depending on your chosen language. Exit Steam completely, if you just delete this file, it will be rewritten after restart, so I repleced this file with completely empty 0 byte file AND changed permissions so user/Steam can not edit or rewrite it.

Finally these ugly red underlines are gone again.
The file for customizing / disabling dictionaries changed from this:
%localappdata%\Steam\htmlcache\UserPrefs.json
to this:
%localappdata%\Steam\htmlcache\Default\Preferences

However you now can also do it graphically:

With the latest update
chrome://settings/languages
is now available to all users.

That means you can easily customize your spellcheck language (or disable spellcheck) without having to edit any hidden files.

Please also be aware of these bugs carried over from the beta:

Spellcheck context menu is non-functional (does not react to mouse clicks)
