That means you are talking to a quest giver with an inactive quest.
But how are you supposed to see that without having to laboriously click through?
In general, the companions (one of the biggest mod problems at the moment) could use a bit more love in the mod. I think one in the tavern is too few, especially since you've unfortunately also created companions that are simply useless.
And all companions have a use, although granted not all companions their stats are what they should be.
Not sure why vampires would be better vs others.
In the future it might not even be possible to recruit cultures that simply wouldn't work together.
But then all cultures urgently need a sufficient selection of companions for different tasks (captain, squad leader, governor, etc.), because the current selection only covers this if you recruit from all factions.
Training companions is simply too time-consuming and sometimes not even reasonably possible.
And for your information, I think I've discovered another bug.
According to the manual, the companions in the taverns should change every 7 days, but they don't always.
I've tried several times now, and sometimes the same companion is still there even after 10 days or more.
