Does not work (bug description) SOLVED
Docking ring connects with other docking ring successfully only when "the central block" from the one of sides is filled by solid block (e.g. armor block but not airlock). But when the central block is there the whole idea is useless.
===UPD===
Connectivity depends on docking clamp relative orientation. If clamps don't merge, you should try to spin the clamp on 90, 180 or 270 degrees. It works ;)

I managed to recreate your problem after a few minutes of thinking. What you meant to say was: "In order to get the rings to work, you have to use an armor block in place of the airlock door. The obvious problem here is you can't travel through armor blocks."

Additional: I just tried docking with the Keen default doors in place of the airlock doors, and no go. Something about doors and possibly open spaces.

Additional 2: Any block with an opening (the passageway block for example) or lack of any block (meaning nothing is there, just a big opening) will prevent the rings from docking. I also ran into a weird bug where I removed the airlock door, and the remote control block on the ship stopped letting me take control of the ship.

More Additional: The docking ring sector does affect the clamps.
