Near the end of the run a checkpoint was made but it was still ~500m away from the end and with about 15 seconds left on the timer. So I had to restart the whole level and make sure to speed through it to avoid this. So yeah I'm not sure if you can but it would make more sense for the checkpoints to be somehow tied to the timer or be less in number to avoid this soft lock.
