Main Easter Egg Guide
(I'm not sure if I'm allowed to do this)

does shooting the skull on the pike do anything?

It activates an easter egg song. There are 3 skulls, the one on the pike, one on a computer console in the room next to it, and the third is on the canyon walls somewhere (I hit it with the upgraded scavenger).

Has anyone actually found the skull on the canyon walls yet? I want to actually find it but it's obviously hard to look for something small while being attacked.

Its actually on top of on of the central pillars in the map. It can be very hard to see but here's a screenshot of it:
