Something tells me that there is some sort of problem within the source code that is preventing the sound to play. I compared the weapon scripts for both the updated HL2 and Deathmatch and they look the same to me. The best thing I could do is to decompile the Crossbow model and play the sound within the .qc file.
Years go by, and I finally decide to bring it back promising that any models that I do not modify will not go into my fix pack. Now, it seems like users like you want me to fix most annoyances with the models instead of keeping it Vanilla. I will consider my options and then, when I have time, update the fix pack along with uploading other optional fixes to the Workshop.
1. Make Gordon hold the ar2 with two hands
and 2. Enlarge the SMG's grenade launcher tube, like MMOD
