1) I think there should be limit amount of explosions happening (i recomend using math.random(1,20) == 11) - experiment with values. If u have used guided missile as a base, you should see that explosions can be casted only when asteroid collide with something. If u used meteor strike (esp latest version) is a base... Than its more tricky.
2) I would say that asteroid should be raycasted from the sky (but thats up to u obv)
3) There is one thing that affect perfromance in a better way. U might wanna have gravitational effect that pulls stuff into ur asteroid (if it has a makehole effect). That will make less amount of derbis (because the most small of them would be sucked in).
