So much the best that it was the first to get screwed on release day for being deemed too easy and empty. Brave New World certainly fixed the endgame, making it interesting... but it's still a simple and empty game. Civ5 is the beginning of the series' downfall, bringing it into the mainstream of casual gaming.
The last good (and best) is Civ4, which is incidentally the most complex, complete, and difficult game in the series (in addition to having the best mods and a futuristic vanilla phase).
