Why is saying thank you so hard nowadays?

I've been on Steam for over 20 years and man these forums have changed, and not in a good way.
It used to almost be like a formula.
It went like this:
1. Person asks for help
2. Person gets help
3. Person says thank you for the help.

Two of these things still happen every day around here. But #3 seems to be an after thought if it's even a thought at all.
Of course it's not all the time, but it is far too often to simply be dismissed. And it's also happening IRL.

People are too often just inconsiderate jerks. I've taken to calling it out more often here on the forum and also in real life. Not surprisingly, some people don't like that. So If someone doesn't say thank-you when I hold the door (which I always do if someone is behind me), I now say in a slightly elevated voice, "In case you're unaware, It's customary to say thank you when someone holds the door for you". It usually gets me a dirty look and occasionally I get the finger. Every once in a while I actually get an apology which is always a nice surprise.

Here on the forum it's a mixed bag when I call someone out. Earlier today I got accused of all kinds of things for calling someone out for not saying thank you, AND it wasn't even from the person I was calling out. It's gotten crazy. So many inconsiderate jerks.

Because it is an American store.

If it was a Canadian store we'd start every single post with apologising.

I do not care if people thank me, because I believe good deeds are always rewarded in one way or another.
When the last of my grandparents died, one thing left to me was a little wood plaque with the inscription -" Do not do evil, it is a sin, do not do good, it is wasted. "- . It has to be taken from a philiosophical point, it can also be taken literally. I think of it in certain situations.

You may be entirely missing the point. Which is that manners are quite literally disappearing and it is a symptom of a much larger problem.

Courtesy is always wonderful to see, but your sense of accomplishment and worth shouldn't depend on whether others are capable of expressing gratitude or not. As someone before me mentioned, good deeds will bring back either way, no need to demand something in exchange.To answer your original question; 'Why has it become so hard for people to display gratitude?' though. There is a ton of reasons, one of them being that social media encourages individuals to measure their worth against curated images of others’ success, and that comparison brings dissatisfaction and people focus on what isn't present, making it hard to stop an appreciate the small acts that happen at the moment. Gratitude also requires some sort of vulnerability and surrender of "self-importance" (I don't know how to call it, maybe ego?). Then there's also a fear of intimacy, which can impact on that. You can also consider things like entitlement, people thinking they don't need to be thankful for what they think they deserve

I really think you are exaggerating. Expect nothing, do not expect people to have manners, norms and values, this aint the 1800's anymore.

People thank others a lot on these forums. Like D. Flame I get lots of thank yous and such.

I don't expect them, though. Nice bonus, so to speak. I do think people who expect thank yous and then call them out of they don't get them to be kinda jerky, though.

Some of us people also are just introverts who don't talk easily to people. Perhaps it would be courtesy on your end to factor such things in as well, OP.
