...Never played Engage due to not buying or playing it yet.

I just know that it's disappointing in terms of story. Gameplay wise it's considered fun... but again story plays a vital role on why you're playing the game.

Cause you certainly ain't just saving a princess I tell you that.

You could go the emulation route cause unless you're planning to buy a lot of retro consoles and physical copies of the prefer fire emblem game you want...

Since you like Three Houses... I think? you might like Awakening a bit more but 3DS eshop is shutdown so unless you're planning to go into the emulation route for all the DLC's I wouldn't recommend it.

You could go back to playing the fire emblem games before awakening but... they're not beginner friendly.. and unless you like having to reset to keep your units alive I recommend Sacred Stones due to it's more darker tone and has a map that you can traverse in to buy stuff or grind at the tower... but then again casual mode didn't exist till fire emblem new mystery of the emblem a remake for the NDS and that didn't went over international releases... for some reason.

And the best bet if you do not want to deal with the reset is probably the 3DS line of games... but that would mean you either go with a okay story with Awakening... or go with the black sheep of the series that turned the game infamous as "Waifu Wars" called Fates where they cranked the waifu part up to 11... don't worry if you're not into the girls they got PLENTY of husbandos.

Hell. Fates even got the anime version of the Mario Bros which I really like because They're both Ninjas and Brothers... and THEY BOTH WEAR RED AND GREEN as their major colors.

...However Fates story is incredibly bad for good reason and you have to either find a copy of one of the two sides... or emulate one with the revelation route installed cause that route is DLC locked and you can't get it anymore cause eshop shutdown.

ALSO TURNS OUT THERE WAS A SPECIAL REVELATION EDITION OF THE GAME THAT CONTAIN ALL 3 ROUTES MEANING IF YOU EMULATE THIS VERSION SPECIFICALLY YOU DON'T NEED TO BUY THE OTHER TWO.
Like... geezus mate they really wanted money that badly... and given that 3DS eshop is down you may have to commit to the emulation path just for the full experience as it's apparently the true route of the game {Thanks Telltale).

You COULD wait till the next Fire Emblem Game for the Switch 2 comes out... but that's waiting obviously.

But your choices are very limited on what you're looking for and what you're experience should be like when playing... and since Three Houses has a mix of both for both veterans and new players... you're best bet is the 3DS Era, Engage or the new one for the Switch 2.

Otherwise you better hope you can bare seeing your units die over and over again as you restart the map as the game autosaves after every fight so if your units die they're gone for good as again. Casual mode doesn't exist and you either iron man it or just trial and error till you get it right.

...Just remember that if you're planning to buy the physical copy of the 3DS era just know you can't get the third route for fates and DLC for both 3DS games unless you emulate which is a hellhole in of itself. Cause potential viruses and sh*t from going into shady or inconspicuous sites.

Otherwise go with engage if you don't want to feel like you're missing the full experience.
Cause both the 3DS games has some content that can affect your game only available in DLC's like exclusive classes, units, items, and sometimes extra story beats if you care to see your favorite characters interact some more.

...Just know if you're going with Fates be prepared to meet the popular purple haired Nohrian Bicycle who really was made for the male audiences like geezus she has like about 7-11? Alts in Heroes like holy **** that's how popular she is despite the story makes her your older stepsister which I scream, "Who wrote this script?".

And Kaze the result of what happens when you decide to make Luigi a Ninja, remove his mustache, make him hot, give him green hair, a likable personality, and a death penalty if you don't A rank his support on the conquest route... seriously why is that a thing specifically for him?

...If you can't tell I like Fire Emblem.
Problem is Fire Emblem is going the waifu route now and yeah dark times indeed.

...Oh yeah Awakening has the 1000 year old dragon loli with a design that makes me say "Seriously what the actual **** they smoking when designing her like that!?".

Engage has good gameplay but the story is pretty bland. Three Hopes is good if you like Warriors games, as it's basically just Three Houses but with better outcomes. DO NOT play Fire Emblem Heroes, it's a trash gacha with absurd power-creep on top of power-creep every single banner. Awakening is decent but the mechanics are dated compared to the newer ones with similar systems. Fates has great class/skill customization and good gameplay, but the main character is dumb as a doornail and the story...exists.

TLDR: Three Houses has the best story (Three Hopes if you like Warriors games), Fates/Engage has the best class/skill system with good gameplay but weaker story, Awakening is good if you can tolerate the dated mechanics.

Cause holy **** the power creep is somehow more insane than Pokemon's...
And if you introduce yourself into this game as a new person getting into the series you WILL be confused as hell on who everyone is and where everyone comes from as this game has characters in games that are STILL YET to be officially released locally and can be only be played as a fan translation and the games are even MORE difficult than the GBA games.
...And if you don't know who any of them are that's the game's fault and not on you cause... the game wasn't really meant for newcomers and is more of a anniversary game than anything else.

...And they won't remake any of the prior to the first Fire Emblem game released internationally.

...Oh sh*t I forgot about Echoes Shadows of Valentia that game is on the 3DS and was awesome as hell... but I didn't play that game and it ALSO HAS that DLC problem :/.

And this year's story I stopped caring cause... they're really pushing the waifu part this time around and it shows in the story... and last year's story was getting good till it just ends anticlimactically with no warning or foreshadowing.

...I think you heard what the hell a Fire Emblem Shadows is and yep it is indeed terrible.

I forgot to mention Three Hopes due to it being a Warriors/Hack and Slash game... and the fact that they left more questions than answers bugs me.

...At least I made the Linhardt become the guy who punch things like how I made him a War Monk in Three Houses by having him learn how to brawl better than Caspar.
