anyone remember a time, before valve removing this?
remember their changes to the rules?

https://steamcommunity.yuanyoumao.com/app/593110/eventcomments/3833170517023813706?snr=1_2108_9__2107

why was the "no politics, religion and prone to huge arguments" rule, removed?

all it brought was political discourse and 99.9% of it being about hate of america, or hate of americans and hate of everything about, or involving them.

they also added the nonsense steam points, to aid in "rating" comments or other nonsense, across the platform, essentially turning it into social media that doesnt actually have many people using the "steam forums", but majority being games forums....

loads of alt and/or bot usage, spam and worse, for years going on in the forums.

watching moderation fail constantly, dealing with all this stuff, support seemingly ignoring all of it, including moderation failings.

and these "templates" speak for themselves...
"This post contains content that is inflammatory and likely to create arguments, rule violations, and other non-constructive replies. This type of content is not allowed on the Steam Community."
or..
"This post contains content that is combative, argumentative, or is likely to derail the discussion. This type of content is not allowed on the Steam Community."
or..
This post contains content used to insult, harass, or abuse Steam users. This type of content is not allowed on the Steam Community.

we complained in the forums, when they removed the rule, we complained when they added the steam points, we complained when moderation and support, took a huge dip in quality, or even doing anything at all....

then you have the stuff revealed about X (which shows loads of left/dem, "maga", etc... accounts all being "foreign bot accounts", trying to influence americans and american politics, voting, etc..

but keep in mind, "bots" have been used since the 90's (its nothing surprising), be it forums, chats, social media, even in video games, for example "diablo 2 (original), the difference now, is its more prevalent and AI nonsense has helped in aiding usage.

they need to bring the rule back, enforce proper rules by "definition" and not "interpretation", also add 2 way blocking... (for reasons).

and maybe, even a separate steam client for each region...

have a nice day

Just a wild guess:

Becasue anything can be about it. Anything can lead to a "huge argument", while they don´t explain where "huge" begins, and "big" ends. Also anything can be about politics or religion. And i furthr assume that 99.9% of the poeple are 18+, and around zero percent (rounded down) are minors.

That being said: certain things like "inflammatory", or "inctiting" can also be anything, so they didn´t really replace the vague rules with better ones, but rather they use other words, to delete or shut down anything, if they feel like it.

Also the problem is not that they removed this rule - the problem is that they removed the forum moderation around the same time, instead of hiring full time people to add onto it.

For now i would be fine if they at least bring the spellcheck back, but somehow it´s missing since a couple of days, after the automatic cange was removed a couple of weeks ago. I assume they want to bring down the quality of the forums, so the people wouldn´t miss them when they say that they shut the forums down. Which would be the honest thing to do.

well, i think both are a problem, they removed rules that should have stayed, i mean we are on a gaming platform, not a social media site, or political forum.

imho, politics doesnt belong in games, nor their forums (nor religion).

yep, the moderation issue is quite bad.

as for rules, i dont like rules that one cant learn, as moderation "interprets" their own view of the rules (which essentially makes the linked rules, a "show piece"), thus i have to read theirs and forum users minds, to know what is or isnt rules..., essentially walking on egg shells, this sentiment has been noted by many in these forums, its become a horrible experience, to say the least.

but also watch as people break rules frequently and if you do the same (example you both say the same word), only 1 person gets punished, but this is also a repeatable circumstance, which shows a bad trend.

as for the "right click context menu".... :steamsad:

spell check, dictionary and all of that has been broken for over a month.

everything is spelled incorrectly, or isnt, according to steam lol.

at one point, copy/paste didnt work either, but it randomly started working.

anywho, have a nice day

it was removed to allow the USAID and OCCRP propagandists to post their garbage without filter leading up to the 2024 election.

I think it was probably because nearly everything is inherently political in some way or the other.
While the political threads are annoying, I'd rather have them than just censoring every person who thinks X thing or Y stance.
All they need is polit subforum. Everything gets moved there and the bots that like it can tok there

its a gaming forum, we honestly dont need politics here (or in games).

It´s off topic on a gaming platform. Literally it means that gaming content has nothing to do with these forums. There´s steam discusssions which would be for general gaming topics or steam in general. Or the hardware forums to talk hardware.

Here it´s about how Trump secretly convinced all women to not ♥♥♥♥ with gaming men - so they would all vote for him, becasue he would promise that every man has the right to ♥♥♥♥ every woman, and they couldn´t abort the pregnancy. To raise the fertility rate - and to have even more voters in future, because everybody would thank Trump for their birth, as the real father of the nation.

Also it´s hard to avoid politics in many strategy games...

well, i guess they could simply just shut the "steam forums" down, leave anything bug/beta/etc.. and game forums.

though, i would rather the rule brought back, along with other issues fixed.

that said, have a nice day

I wonder how bad “everyone” has to misbehave for Steam to change it back?

Disclaimer: I am not encouraging misbehavior. I’m just speaking hypothetical.

I'd make a burner account to test

so, its likely, that much of this "bot farms" spreading propaganda, has caused much of the divide, be it race, religion, politics, etc... and likely has caused much of the riots, arson/destruction and possibly even harm/or worse to other people, through all this social media political nonsense.

these forums have been flooded with spam, political/religious/race discourse, hate threads and worse, people breaking rules 24/7, for years now... and not a single worth while solution, has been done, to resolve the issues.

be safe and have a nice day peeps

if enough media/bad press get published about this train wreck of a forum they will.

Steam isnt 4chan or Bluesky, they actually care about their reputation
