Best Buy sold me an ASUS GPU box with a Lenovo OEM 4080 inside (confirmed by Lenovo) – Floor Sample unit
I wanted to share this situation because a lot of gamers buy hardware at Best Buy while traveling, and I really need some help understanding how this even happened.

During a trip to Miami, I bought an open-box ASUS TUF GPU labeled as FLOOR SAMPLE.
That means it was a store-owned display unit, not a customer return.

When I got home, I realized the GPU inside the ASUS box was not ASUS at all.
It was a Lenovo Legion OEM RTX 4080, the model used in the Legion T7 34IRZ8 desktop a GPU that is never sold separately anywhere.

I contacted Lenovo NA and sent them:
• PCB photos
• Serial numbers
• Residue stickers
• Fan assembly photos
• Mismatched screws
• The ASUS box + Best Buy receipt

Lenovo confirmed 100%:
• The GPU is OEM Lenovo, not ASUS
• The part numbers don’t match any ASUS card
• Lenovo never installs ASUS fans
• The GPU is not sold standalone
• So the card was tampered with before Best Buy sold it

Since this was marked as a Floor Sample, the only people who ever had access to it were Best Buy employees, not customers.
So this wasn’t a typical “customer swap” scam.

I also made a short video explaining the situation, because it’s easier to show the physical differences and the serial mismatches visually.

If anyone here can help me understand how this could happen inside a store-owned unit, or if you’ve seen something similar, I’d appreciate it a lot.
I’m trying to figure out the best next step, since Best Buy refused to help once I left the U.S.

Are you assuming the Best Buy Geek Squad knows the difference between an ASUS and a Lenovo?

You should feel fortunate it was a similar class gpu and not some total junk. I guess the lesson is always open after check out inside the store when buying anything "open box".

There simply are not very many electronic stores left anymore.

In many major metropolitan cities, the only choice may be Best Buy.

It's either them or go online. And wait. Many of the major sellers on there such as Newegg are falling apart.

So practically, for many, it's buy from Monopolyzon or nowhere.
Prob swapped out by an employee, if not at bestbuy, then further up the chain. GPU's are just that valuable

It's Miami, arguably home to the most fraudsters in the USA.

Try contacting the Best Buy corporate office, not the local store. You might have more success.

Also, report it https://www.justice.gov/criminal/criminal-fraud/report-fraud
