What should I get for my new PC?
My first one just broke so I’m looking into making my own with a vague budget of around 1700 dollars. This is the first time I’m building one so I have almost no idea what to do about parts and compatibility between them. My previous pc had a RTX 3060 graphics card, AMD RYZEN 7 5800x 8 core processor, 16 gbs of ram, and 1 terabyte of memory. I have a vague idea of what to get (5060 and above GPU, 2 terabytes of memory, and 32 gbs ram) but lots of stuff I wouldn’t know about like how to know which processor is better than another or what motherboard to use.

Why are you spending $1700 on a whole PC? Just upgrade your graphics card and RAM.

I can't see there being a significant enough benefit to a 5060, to warrant the entire system.

If you were upgrading to an RTX 5090, then perhaps DDR5 and a socket AM5 chip would be warranted. But a mere 5060, I'd say just upgrade the GPU and RAM, and pocket the difference.

I'm assuming that getting 32GB of RAM, whichever fits your system (DDR4? DDR5?) would be better than going whole hog for next to no benefit.
I do not envy you, because it's kind of a tough time to be building right now with the BS hiking all the prices with RAM and really all other hardware.
What do you mean by "broke"? Is the whole thing fried? Flooded? Can you salvage any of the parts? Because I'm not sure it is even worth trying to upgrade that CPU at the moment since it's still perfectly respectable.
You could just get a new GPU and (if needed) PSU then call it a day, IMO.

You will probably get better answers in the "Hardware and Operating Systems" discussion board, btw. Although there are some users here that frequent there as well.
What broke on your computer. It should only cost like $200 max depending on part

My pc is like barely hanging on so I’m trying to get a new one that I can easily upgrade in the future. My previous was a small prebuilt that I would have to get a whole new case for to upgrade a significant amount.
Prices of parts are rather high currently, especially for RAM that basically almost tripled in price in last month or so but you can still build pretty decent rig for this money.
Would have gotten 9800X3D CPU too for this price last month.

You should be able to get a prebuilt 5070, 32 Gigs of RAM for around 1350 - 1500 for the Christmas holiday sales.if you look around a little. AMD seems to be the choice of processors after Intel screwed the pooch a couple generations ago, causing processor degradation, although I think they have that problem fixed now.

In the end, the hardware forum will give you a more informed answer the Off Topic.

Pretty much every part is fried somehow and I have no idea lol. I might be able to salvage the cpu though. I also didn’t see that there was an actual board for this type of stuff so thanks for telling me.

when you say 'memory' do you mean disc space?

Because you're also using the term RAM, which means Random Access Memory, and is often just referred to as 'memory'.
Mb yeah it is disc space

If you can list what your motherboard is, that would be helpful. If you have B650 or above, then a simple upgrade is all what you need. At that point there's no need to buy a whole new system. A motherboard with B650 is compatible and can upgrade CPU to 9xxx series.

16 Gb of Ram can be upgraded to 32Gb if your motherboard supports it. Again without knowing what motherboard you currently using, rather you can just upgrade the system instead of buying the whole new system.

Edit: According to your comment updated that the system is fried. In that case I would buy parts and built it yourself. It not that hard to do. PCpartpicker has options to select which part you want and shows each part rather it compatible with another. After you list parts in the PCpartpicker, then check prices for each part to which store that within your budget and buy it.

There are countless of install instructions for each part if you're not familiar. Building a PC is pretty much straight forward provided that you have necessary tools to install the products with.

Upgrade to 32 GB ram
Pick up an Intel Arc B580

You'll be set for another 5yrs easy.

If he has a 5800X he'd be on AM4 still, so he wouldn't have a B650. Probably a B450 or 550.
It might be safer to make a first PC build out of scavenged low end parts on a shoestring budget before building a higher end rig and you can research the next build using better parts while working on the prototype. I've never built a PC before and the last time I was thinking about it I got a good deal online for a prebuilt machine plus I've never had room for a test bench. It must be a great feeling to witness your own creation boot up for the first time.

I just found an old pc that I took apart and put back together to learn abt assembly so I was pretty lucky to have one.

uhhh I just handed it into a repair place to see if anything could be done so I couldn’t find the exact motherboard. I got the asus rog strix G10DK prebuilt if that helps.
