Do YOU consider 16GB VRAM sufficient for most games? (Yes or No)
Certain games recommend 8GB VRAM (FFXVI, Talos Principle Reawakened), but are there really any games that suggest 16GB at default? There are desktops with 32GB or laptops capping at 24GB VRAM regardless if one has a 5080/90. Why are certain titles intensive (looking at you... MH Wilds!) when it comes to VRAM dependency?

Certain games need to store more data, more multitasking, as such 16 GB is becoming the "new" standard.

16GB is probably enough now
but god knows how much VRAM future games will use with multi fake frames on, pathtracing and whatever Nvidia will come up with to justify price increases

8GB VRAM for FF16 is questionable as people report massive performance problems with such amount of memory. Especially after 30minutes of gameplay and fast traveling between big towns. Official system requirements seem dishonest or at least over optimistic.

16GB is enough for any game right now with sensible settings

BUT

Some games can use more at max settings. Space Marine 2 with 4K textures can push you to almost 24GB.
Jedi Survivors can use about 22GB is some sections at max settings.
Frame Gen may require some more vram on top if you care about that.

it's largely tittle (and team) dependent. What you can do with a small Hware foot print is largely dependent on as much as the art team as the technical/engineering side. Last few years has been.. .. un-impressive in that respect = which leads to larger memory (or other ) requirements in certain tittles.

EDIT many of the people who were actually good at it are in leadership roles not doing the work. .. those replacing them. .. often leave much to be desired. There are exceptions but rarely in triple A. These days those tend to be the bottom feeders of the labor pool. It's alot like red neck engineering "when in doubt add more metal" same with memory.

Even 4GB of Vram is sufficient, i have never had problems running any games but keep in mind i play at 1080p. For 4k resolution you need more vram but even 16gb would be overkill.

you sound like the guy who bought my old GTX 970 during the pandemic...
I was happy though because I got more than I asked for lol
he seemed to be happy too because he thought 4GB or 3.5GB for 970 was more than enough

the 970 with 3.5g of 'fast' ram and 0.5g of 'slower' ram wsa fine for games at its time
even at 1080p60

the gpu only used the slower ram when the fast ram was full
and the only things that could tell were specific benches that tested all rams speed
or just filled 3.5g then stressed the last .5g

for most games beginning at the 70s til now, yes 16g vram is more than enough
if you limit to only games made in the last year, most would still be playable with 8g of vram and 16g system ram

realistically only the most demanding games and rendering/cad tasks can use 16g of vram or more, but that may change in a few years, who knows
