How does Steam link work?
Is it possible to stream my games from my desktop to a TV on the same network?
I heard that the Steam Link app is supposed to allow this, but it does not exist on LG or Samsung TVs.

Do only certain TVs with certain operating systems allow this?
How does it work?

to achieve this your TV must have Steam Link app . Steam has provided this for Anroid TV/Google TV and Apple TV . Samsung run TizenOS , LG run webOS that s why you cant stream to them

how remote play works
https://proxy.yuanyoumao.com/remoteplay

you stream from your pc to another of your devices
using steam link hardware, link apps

samsung and lg tv apps are no longer fully supported
as their devs dropped support for steam link apps

android and apple tvs are still fully supported and can be updated either by the store or manually downloading and installing the app

steam link forum (subforums for each client device type, android, apple/ios, macos, linux, quest, pi, windows)
https://steamcommunity.yuanyoumao.com/app/353380/discussions/0/

only limitations are no vrr, hdcp or hdr support
freesync/gsync will be capped at 60 or the clients refresh rate
hdcp content cannot be captured, resulting in black screen with audio (workaround is to disable hardware acceleration in browser or media player to disable hardware hdpc display checks)
hdr will be disabled for the clients stream, sometimes resulting in blown out colors or artifacts
best to disable it in windows or game before streaming

remote play together works pretty much the same way to friends steam account, controls can only be passed to the game, not to desktop

many link apps can work in desktop mode, but some are limited to only game streaming

as for streaming outside of your local network, it is possible but takes 30-50mb/s upload at host location, and open ports
UDP Ports: 27031 and 27036
TCP Ports: 27036 and 27037
and for VR Streaming add, UDP ports 10400 and 10401

most isps support that, but some mobile isps block them,
and schools, college, dorms, or public locations may also block, ymmv

if streaming to wifi on your network, make sure wifi isolation is disabled in router settings, so lan/wifi devices can communicate directly to each other
also disable any vpn
and make sure windows network is set to private not public
any of those will force remote play to use internet relays and your upload+download instead of direct lan connections
if you search for computers and it found, pair and do the network test before playing

Do you have Steam Link hardware box

You can grab a cheap Amazon Fire Stick and that has the Steam Link app, Black Friday soon too so super cheap for one.

The TV and the PC are in the same room.
They are both connected directly with an Ethernet cable, 1 gig Internet connection.
The Streaming into the TV idea is a sort of replacement/alternative to getting a console.

Do I have to get specifically Android TVs for this? Is there nothing I can plug in that allows the Steam Link to work on any TV?

Is there a better alternative other than Steam link to achieve this sort of Steam couch console experience on the TV?

why dont you read the other posts

You could also get the Google TV Streamer. The older Chromecast with Google TV works too. Both can run Android apps on your TV.

In the same room? Then just run an HDMI cable. WTF you using the Steam Libk app form. If the hdmi run is beyond enough to do 4K/60 then do a run using HDMi to Ethernet and then back to HDMi as a means of doing longer cable runs

use hdmi if possible

tvs do not have network ports faster than 100mb/s
that will be the limiting factor, for above 1080p60

4k needs much more bandwidth than the tvs network and cpu can support
only workaround is to use a pc or device that can output 4k directly to the pc with hdmi

The room is rather large and the desk and TV are different parts of the room, don’t see how HDMI would work.
This is unfortunate, guess it’s just not going to work and I’ll have to get a console :(

1080p looks fine on a 4k display, its just double pixeled
thats what the hardware steam link is limited to

alts would be an old laptop that has 4k output, or a pi 4+, or android box

Can't I just get any TV, like the LG, and buy a Streamer like the Nvidia Pro or Apple TV?
It has both android for Steam Link and higher Ethrenet support that would allow me to use my 1gig speed.

Modern TVs should have the ability to install Steam Libk directly on it from the app store.

Steam Link isn't supported on LG and Samsung TV's. They have their own OS's.

android and apple tvs support the link app
lg and samsung dropped support since their stores are locked down too tight

but tv apps are limited to 1080p due to their (fast 10/100mb/s) network port
wifi might go faster if near the router

even new tvs are too cheap and slow to put a gigabit (1000mb/s) or faster lan port on them

best to use another device capable of 4k output to the tv to stream at 4k

some amazon fire sticks run a version of android, you can install file browser app and sideload link app to make it work
but better off using an old laptop, or pi or android box that have gigabit lan port and 4k hdmi ouput
