GabeCube > $500 = flop
If the GameCube costs more than $500, $600 at most, it will flop.

It doesn't have the added benefit of portability like the Steam Deck.

It isn't upgrade able like a standard PC.

8GB of vRAM is already going the way of the dodo.

The machine doesn't have FSR4 support by default (AFAIK).

And things like the PS5 still exist.

Even if it is not trying to compete with consoles, it does need to compete on price. Times are touch and people would love to buy in on a cheap gaming PC, but the price to performance needs to make sense. This can me SteamOS's PS2 moment, but only if they play it right.

But you have access to the whole steam's library.

So, that means that most people already own lots of games that they can play on that system. On the otherhand, if you buy a playstation or switch, you have to buy new games for those consoles.

if you have xbox/switch/ps you can play most games you already own from the previous gen

$500 for a future streaming box isnt a good price point

the hardware steam link at launch was $50, a bit high, but at the end of its life was $10 or free with purchase of a game
they are still fully functional and supported by steam after 10 years, which is impressive, cant say that for much other pc hardware

as long as they offer continued support, and it will run games that are lower than its spec it will be fine, else stream from a more capable pc to it

Hahaha "You can just buy a console", bruh, the worst gaming PC is better than a console. Everytime.

Its a PC, its already better than a console. Infact since its not settings locked it can play games with better performance than a PS5.

Also I find it funny that the same people who claim 8GB was VRAM is totally fine when Nvidia does it is now super hung up on it.

a big problem i personally have with pricing of this thing is that it's not going be able to play Fortnite or GTA Online right out of the box. and unlike the Steam Deck which is a mobile device, the Windows license won't be free. so i have to consider the cost of adding that windows license to the Gabe Cube on top of whatever it cost. of course this is assuming that they will even support Windows at all.. and release some drivers for it as they had done with the Steam Deck.

So for this reason i do hope the price is more like $500 as well.

Honestly, if there is any reason to worry, its ^^this^^ and not just price.

GTA online averages 45k+ regularly on steam.
No one knows how many PC players for fortnite but estimates put it over 1 mil daily on PC.

Comparatively CS gets about 800-900k

The biggest issue with a main-line steam device is getting all the devs on board with supporting Anti-Cheat on Linux, something more and more are pushing away from.

CS is strong. But Valve cant bank on that. They need to have parity support in all of the mainline titles.

If they are going to succeed, then the following needs to be true in 9/10 cases with the only exceptions being exclusivity and not technicality:

If its on Consoles and PC it must be on the Steam Device too.

As long as that *isnt* true, as long as the steam device is a third rate player, behind consoles and PC's, valve will be held back from the break out this could be.

If, somehow, between now and 2026 release, they can get all major AAA and all major E-Sports developers on board, and push out a product that has nearly identical support parity in all major titles to the likes of consoles or Windows PC's...

And at an affordable price...

They will create a major industry upset and be ballers of the PC gaming world even more than Valve already is.

yeah no....see the PC elitists still cant admit the best selling line for all of NgreedyA history is the X60 line.....not the X70, X80's or now the X90's that are really titan class cards of old.....

260, 460, 560, 660, 760, 960, GOATED 1060 6gb, ect.....

regardless of what you or i have owned these are the best selling of every generation except maybe the 20 series cause they made the 1660 and 1650

I own a 3080....how many people got 3060's or 3060ti's that generation???....hint its the most used card on steaming pile right now

The fact that it only has 8 gb but is adverticed for 4k gaming is biggest critik point i have with the steam box. Everybody is going to hook it up to their tv and most people have 4k tv these days. So upscaling is going to rescue that thing from the lack of rasterization power an Vram? I doubt it.

Also for the majority of people even at small form factor a selfmade and upgradeble pc makes more sense, even if its slighly more expensive first, it will be cheaper in the longrun. There are things like the deskmeet x600 series with am5 and ddr5 or the Deskmeet X300 series with am4 and ddr4 if you wanna go cheaper.

This Gabebox is for consoleros who want a plug and play experience and are not willing to build a sff pc. So it better be priced in the range of the consoles available and competing with it when it releases.
