Bazzite + steam app. Probably the easiest way.

Pretty much any Linux distro will do, as long as you take the time to set up Steam and Proton and Protontricks and ProtonGE and Flatseal and Lutris or Heroic Launcher, etc. yourself instead of having it preinstalled.

Bazzite does a lot of it for you, and is immutable. And makes getting Nvidia to cooperate easier, if you bought their junk.

There won't be any available SteamOS outside of the one for Steam Deck until after the new Steam Machine launches. Even then and even as we speak, no one "needs" SteamOS when it's just dumbed down Linux. So just go use a proper well supported Linux distro and then of course Steam and anything you want. As most things in WinOS have Linux alternatives such as MS Office for example you can use OpenOffice or LibreOffice

Why restrict your PC into a console by using SteamOS. It's completely stupid

I have Linux Mint on my gaming machine now, I love it but as you said.. I was looking for a dumbed down Steam os version so I can put my spare pc to work. I have drove a few vans of used PC`s do a recycled center bc of Microsoft obsolescence. Just dealing with Windows at wrk I want at home to be free of all that bull and struggle. That is why I asked you lads if you know a Steam OS page or download.. Well not out there yet... so I will wait. It is ok. I have Steam deck and Linux pc.. will buy a TV next year :-)

Many moons ago I used puppy linux on a very old machine. It was tiny, tiny. Ran like a charm. I don't think steam OS will be much lighter than mint (depending on what you have installed). And you can probably strip a few things from mint.

Literally just use any Linux. SteamOS will not do anything better than any other distro. It’ll probably be worse actually, since it’s being designed exclusively for Valve’s hardware.

windows runs 20/40w more on both the gpu and cpu vs linux in idle so technically yeah you are right XD

microsoft won't pay for your electricity bill that 40/80w when gpu/cpu is combined for the data they profit off from you the last time you could have 0-2% cpu usage in idle was with windows 7

I think I saw a video from Linus Tech Tips a while ago where they showed that Steam linked to where people can download SteamOS in one of their news postings or something.

I heard the reason they aren't doing an official public release of SteamOS is mostly because of NVIDIA causing problems with their closed-source GPU drivers. I think I heard SteamOS works better for people with AMD hardware because it has open source drivers or something.

Just literally use any Linux distro. Steam OS is developed specifically for Steam hardware, The Deck, Cube, Frame, etc.

If you have a regular PC, use a regular distro. Mint, CachyOS, Bazzite, take your pick. They all work better than SteamOS and they're easier to install.

For gaming and basic office work and such, shouldn't be any issues using a Li ux distro like Mint or Ubuntu. Then just get Steam on there and enable BigPictureMode
