There is no Steam Machine version.
Install whatever linux (or windows) you prefer. Install steam. Activate big picture mode. Done!
SteamOS for PC will be released in ValveTime.
SteamOS itself is not what's going to matter, it's what it's going to inevitably add to the kernel that matters because it'll all come to other distros.
Bazzite is also made to be a SteamOS substitute, based on Fedora Atomic.
If you want Linux on your desktop just install a distro and move on.
"SteamDeck=0 %command%" This workaround exists for many reasons but I have seen people use for Bazzite which on AMD hardware seems to think it's a Steam Deck and was limiting the ability to play at full power on many games.
Not sure you understand. The kernel contains more drivers than just that of the deck hardware. It contains the same optimizations in the kernel, MESA, and other components on SteamOS for the Deck as it does for the GabeCube or any other up to date Linux distro.
