What you "expect", may not mean the current implementation is wrong or bad. No matter what a developer does, some people will think it's fine, some people will think it's awful. Who's right?
Personally, I find it easier to accept what is and if I want something different, either use a different app (if possible) or manage your own workarounds. IE if you want something done "right" do it yourself.
Sure you can complain and if enough people are also complaining then maybe that does warrant a change. But to be honest I don't hear to many people complaining about the amount of time chat history is kept. Not to say that means a lot, but often times when people don't like something and are complaining about it, it's pretty visible.
