Steam Gaming on Android via the Steam Mobile App
With the Announcement of the new Steam Frame, it has been confirmed that Valve has been working on x86 emulation on android for some time, with active development efforts to patch holes in FEX.

I've taken a look into apps such as gamehub, gamehub lite, and gamenative and it appears that the primary translation layer being used here is FEX, so the increase in functionality and compatibility of the apps can largely be traced back to a push by Valve engineers. The current apps however require you to login to your Steam Account via a third party app which is unappealing to many users, and the alternatives to this have much higher friction for getting setup.

I'm hoping that we see this ARM functionality expanded beyond just a Steam OS release on android for the Frame, into allowing users to access the translation layers and download games directly in the Steam App. This functionality removes friction for mobile gamers, and gives Valve direct access to a much larger market for game sales without even needing to sell new hardware.

You can make the argument that may phones won't perform well, but the newer chips do surprisingly well with the new pushes in development. For example, on handheld android devices with chips such as the snapdragon 8 gen 2, you can play games such as hollow knight silksong at 60 fps with steam cloud saves enabled using gamehub right now. This is downloaded and running locally on the device. 3D games are much more inconsistent, but are improving.

I would love to see this enabled as a native functionality within the Steam Ecosystem in the future. Thanks for reading, leave your thoughts below!

This would be awesome. We get more flexibility in how we play our games, and Valve gets to print themselves money. It's a win-win.

That would actually be so cool. I’m already playing MGSVTPP via gamehub lite.

I really hope, that's Valve's plan for the future.

With a full Steam Client on Android, it also becomes a lot more attractive for devs to port their x86 games to Android/ARM.

But even with FEX I imagine many Indie games running without any issue.
Stuff like Stardew Valley, Sonic Mania, Shredder's Revenge, etc.
Would be so cool to have all that stuff available on our Tablets and Retro-Handhelds.

I had the Deck for a couple of years and while I loved it, I ended up playing my Android devices more. More portable and quieter. But the Deck got me back into PC gaming (and Steam itself). Since then, many of us have been waiting for a 'Steam on ARM' solution. Winlator/GameHub while not perfect has already unlocked a good number of my Steam indies on my 8G2 device.

Valve, I'm sure you already see the financial upside to opening up the Steam store to the massive Android user base. Please make an official APK or other solution which allows me to play my Steam games (and buy new ones) on one of the many Snapdragon gaming devices that already exist.

I understand that there will need to be discussions with apple and google related to sales in the Steam Mobile App Store if the games can be played on the mobile devices, but for something as simple as "we can't agree on the money" to prevent such a groundbreaking and impressive technological advancement from being enjoyed would be awful.

YES literally! It's the easiest way for Valve to break into the biggest gaming global market.

As far as "sideloading" goes, Epic already set the precedent by pushing to get their mobile store onto both Android and Apple, so theoretically Valve just needs to ride the wave and enable it.

we just need native app no need garbage emulation on device that use battery to run, look how bad winsdows ARM version and no one care to support it other than some fingers.

I would love to see this, especially because I'm selling my Steam Deck in favour of the Ayn Thor as it's more portable and I don't use my Steam Deck much for that reason.

I can't see Google wanting this on the Play Store so maybe a separate apk that is hosted on the Steam website like Epic has.
