Disable updates / rollback option
There has been a 3 year old, closed thread about this, but in the light of the recent update of a certain game that probably nobody wanted and most certainly nobody needed, here again the suggestion to add a "NO, seriously, just don't"-option to the list of update modes.
Thanks to beloved auntie Beth, I would even request an option to revert to a previous game-version. I know that this would rarely be used, but at least it could reduce the number of whine-threads about an update that compeletely went south.
Have fun.

The reason Valve went with automatic update with Steam was because back in the days they'd be getting support tickets on bugs that had already been fixed. They got a lot of questions on where to get the patches.
It split up the MP community on several different versions

So ever since Steam was launched people have been asking for this feature. Valve haven't changed yet. I honestly don't think they ever will.

Ask developers to put out beta branches for the game.
Your can just go back two days and see another thread suggesting this as it is becoming a weekly thing.

If you expect Valve to change a core principle of Steam (source: Steamworks documentation), you have wrong expectations.

They already did so with the automatic delaying and scheduling of updates to Valve's benefit. Allowing the user a similar latitude for the customer's benefit would not change any core principle any more. People on this board are always quick to forget that customers are customers too.

The branch system also suffices for as a core principle change.

Maybe one day they just get tired of that annoying background noise.

Core principle. Well fine, back to workarounds for core principles. Once in life I wanted an easy way to keep software running like I like it. Everyone is microsofting these days.

One of these days I would hope they understand that the choice is between providing the older versions or users doing so to other users and that the former is much more workable. Especially since Valve has full control of the update delivery and release storage

Steam has been like this for a long time now. I mean, the original purpose of Steam was being an auto updater. The rest just grew around it.

Also funny, Gabe and such have history at Microsoft. 🤓
I needed this with fallout 4 really bad
Steam already provides the framework for devs to leave version branches.

The devs have to be the ones to use this feature.

Steam cannot force them.

It comes up about once a week, at least.

Steam has been from day one an updating service. Since that time, they've added functionality for devs to allow for multiple versions to exist on the platform. They even recently updated the API to make it easier for users to jump from one to the other, if the devs allow it. However, Steam is a service to devs as much as it is for users. If a dev wants to update their main branch, then Steam is obligated to push that update out to everyone on the main branch. It's part of the 30% commission the devs kick back to Steam.

If you want an older version to stick with, you need to petition the devs of that game to make it available to you on Steam.

Ask the game devs to do this...

There is nothing to force. Valve is in charge of the update distribution, not the developers. Valve can delay updates freely for any reason and have chosen to do so. Letting the users delay is not any different.

I feel ya man. The update really screwed up the game.

Bethesda can't code to save their life.
its either games update or they shut down, take your pick i guess. If a update doesn't agree with you or your computer there is sadly nothing we can do.

My tv updated and it is slow as heck with all the new ads they are forcing down on people.

welcome to 2025 where we update kill hardware to sell you new hardware that is worse.
