A tool in the Steam client or downloaded separately that tells you if your computer is more/less powerful than a Steam Machine
According to this Reddit comment someone at Valve has said that the Steam Machine's specs will be better than 70%+ of Steam users, based on the Steam hardware survey.

It'd be cool if Valve made a little tool, maybe with benchmarks, that would tell you if your current hardware (CPU, GPU, memory, etc.) are better or worse in general than a Steam Machine.

I'm looking to replace my current computer anyways but it'd be fun to see if/how much better a Steam Machine's performance would be.

That wouldn't be positive marketing for the Steam Machine.

What do you mean? Most people, apparently, are using something less powerful than a Steam Machine. At the very least I'd be curious to know.

Besides, I imagine the Steam Machine will still be great value regardless.

Look at its specs, look at your specs, compare, decide.

Valve literally just took the information here... https://proxy.yuanyoumao.com/hwsurvey/

... and built it around that.

Compare to your own specs.
