All of which would be better fulfilled by licensed 3rd parties such as dbrand. We may see one or two different LE versions much like they did with the Deck, but I doubt Valve will devote resources to creating their own library of skins/versions.
Also, from what I can tell, the dbrand Companion Cube should be a shell, not just a skin. There is definite structure to the promotional picture. The Steam Machine isn't all that difficult to remove from it's factory case. It should be trivial for 3rd parties to create aftermarket cases given it's size and simple shape.
Oh, the expectation was that they could steal 1 or 2 ideas for LE, and 3rd parties will likely steal these ideas as well for their designs. I personally plan on buying a non-functioning GC to gut to be my GabeCube shell
