Steam settings>cloud>enable Steam Cloud synchronization for applications which support it.
Losing data when updating Steam means you chose the wrong one to update and your saves were over written. Always choose the saves on your hdd.

1: Steam Cloud losing save data and not giving this choice people keep mentioning. The first time this happened was at least 2 years ago so I'm assuming the choice is new, but I didn't get it two weeks ago when the GLOBAL setting was changed without my knowledge or consent.
2: THE GLOBAL SETTING WAS CHANGED WITHOUT MY CONSENT
Yall keep talking about issue 1, I'm mainly concerned with issue 2. As long as users have a choice in whether or not to use the cloud in the first place issue 1 is secondary.
Another thing to be factored in, this kind of switch flipping is standard practice in the tech industry, social media sites have been undoing all 'opt out' options every update for almost two decades now. So no, I don't think this single setting being quietly flipped every two weeks is a bug.
I'm finding the steam cloud setting is being enabled without my input every month or so.
I have no use for the cloud; I have only one device that I use for games. Worse, 'the cloud' is just marketing-speak for 'someone else's' device. I have no desire to store my saves on steam's device; I have my own, local device; it's much faster and more reliable than any remote service.
