Every time i try to launch a game, steamworks common redistributables is being installed, hangs at 29% and then steam opens and gives a "Corrupt download" popup error

Updated instructions:

- Close Steam.
- Download "steamCMD" from Valve's website and place the executable in a new folder. Please avoid placing "steamCMD.exe" in your Steam folder, as it can lead to problems launching the Steam client.
- In the address (folder path) bar of the new folder, type (without quotes) "cmd". This should launch Command Prompt with the directory pointing at the folder location of steamCMD. If not, open Command Prompt and change the directory to point at the folder (look up a guide if you need to).
- Type the following: steamcmd -overrideminos
- The console should show download progress and the steamCMD folder should have new files. At some point, the downloads should finish and there should be an input prompt that says "Steam>".
- Type the following (without the brackets, but include quotes): force_install_dir "<YOUR NORMAL STEAM FOLDER PATH GOES HERE>"
- There is no visual indicator in the console that shows if you did this right. It is also important to complete this step before the next, as the console can give an error, so please be extra mindful.
- Type the following (without the brackets): login <YOUR STEAM USERNAME GOES HERE>
- Type your password afterwards. It will appear blank while typing.
- If you have Two-Factor Authentication, authorize the login. You should see a series of "OK" messages and then another "Steam>" input prompt. You should now be logged in.
- Type the following (without the brackets): app_update <APP ID OF GAME YOU WISH TO UPDATE OR INSTALL>
- Repeat the following step for any other games you wish to update or install.
- Type the following: exit
- Close the console.
- Launch Steam. Your games should now be updated or installed. The "Downloads" section may not show any downloads were completed, but please check by attempting to launch the relevant game(s).

This procedure is not only less confusing, but also requires no file or folder replacements and protects from overwriting important files. As always, if you are concerned, please be sure to back up the folders and files you will be interacting with.

There are additional steps to automate the update/install process:

- Create a text file in your steamCMD folder. For this example, it shall be named (without quotes) "autoinstall.txt".
- Within the text file, type any commands you wish for steamCMD to carry out automatically, spaced by creating a new line for every new command.
- For example:
force_install_dir ./Steam
login username password
app_update 440
exit
- In order to run this script, one would type the following: steamcmd -overrideminos +runscript autoinstall.txt
- Naturally, you will replace "autoinstall.txt" with whatever you have named your script. Please be sure to include (without quotes) ".txt" at the end of the script name.
- You should see in the console that your steamCMD commands were issued in order. Please omit the "exit" command if you wish to review the other commands that took place.

There is one more means of expediting the process:

- Create a text file in your steamCMD folder. For this example, it shall be named (without quotes) "autocmd.bat"
- Be sure that the text file is converted to a batch file, right click it, and choose "edit".
- On a single line, type the following: steamcmd -overrideminos +runscript autoinstall.txt
- Again, please replace "autoinstall.txt" with whatever you have named your script.
- When the batch file is executed, it should automatically run Command Prompt and then run the commands given for steamCMD.

There are many commands that work with steamCMD listed on the download page for it, such as file validation and opting-in for betas. I would recommend reviewing it to better suit your wishes. Also, instructions on how to use steamCMD on Mac and Linux are also available. Thank you again for reading and hopefully you can now enjoy your updated or freshly installed game with more ease.

windows 7

Yup, Valve killed Steam on W7. I have a W7 box for older games, and whenever one gets updated now, it fails on the download due to the new compression system. Same for the Steamworks Common Redistributables.

You can still launch games by temporarily going into offline mode, however. But that too is probably a temporary fix. There's a lot of comments on old games by confused people who don't understand why their retro boxes and W7 VMs no longer work. This is going to snowball more and more as people start realizing why they're getting these errors and become upset that they can't play some older games anymore.

I'm really surprised by this move from Valve. They could've kept a legacy content delivery system in place to not mess with compatibility.

is it steam or windows that's using a new compression system?

Steam.

There's a ghetto way to get around the issue for some games, which is downloading them using Steam on W10+ and then transferring the folder over. This will also probably be "patched" in the near future. But I'm not sure this fix also works for the Steamworks Common Redistributables issue, haven't tried.

As of May 21st, 2025, Valve has updated their compression algorithm to be more CPU and I/O efficient.
This change is not compatible with old clients that could still run on Windows 7 and future content changes will be made using this compression algorithm, resulting in a loss of access to downloads and updates.

As Valve has ended support for Windows 7 since January 1st, 2024, and therefore won't update their client for the use of Windows 7, your officially supported options are:
* Upgrade to Windows 10 (End of Life by October 2025 unless enrolled into ESU)
* Upgrade to Windows 11
* Install Linux Mint and play Windows only games using Proton

If Win10/Win11 is not an option, consider installing Linux Mint. It's free and Proton works with a good portion of games on Steam.

I've copied steamworks common redistributables from my other steam installation on windows 11, but this didn't fix anything, this problem came out of nowhere, I can clear the download cache but I have to do that multiple times so I am looking for an alternative solution
Ettanin 7 月 24 日 下午 2:11
May I ask which game(s) you still need Win7 for?
yanni 7 月 24 日 下午 2:13
none

Then use your installation on Win11 which is still supported.

okay
I fixed it by clearing Download Cache in the settings. I checked this video and step 1 was already fixing the problem with Steamworks Common Redistributables. My games run now fine again.

Ths downlaod/update error is happening on other OS too..

I have Win10 LTSC 64 bit and nothing is updating/downaloding as it should. It's an absolute disaster.

Manually updated the Steamworks Common Redistributables vea DepotDownlaoder. Updated the Microsoft redistributables. Cleared cache. Tried everything.

Thigs are f*** and have been for way, WAY too long. This is unnaceptable.
