Is this game actually worth it?
I've been looking at the reviews for a few minutes now and reading about this game online. Is it worth it it to not only buy it, but play it?

I'm a big fan of AVP style games, even though some may be too derivative for my taste. What I liked about AVP2 was not only how simple it was, but how it was pretty easy to learn but hard and fun to master. Is it the same case with this game?

I hear a lot that the players are a big problem, are they actually that bad? Or are the noobs just mad their getting stomped?

Not to mention the game is pretty much dead, as in no more updates or support can be made. It's never coming back or 100% not to its former glory (from what I can hear)

Is it worth it?

I left this game due to bad admins (their servers are literally named bad) protecting cheaters. BAD servers are overwhelming majority of servers not to imply there are more than 2-3 ns2 active servers at peak gaming hours. There are also smurfs in noob servers (servers where new players are meant to play) ruining the team balances.

There is basically a skill rating for every player which is used to assign players to teams at the start of every game to try to make balanced games. Except this doesn't work because smurfs exist, people have bad/good days, infliated high elo players who only play to increase their elo and ruin the game for everyone in a normal lobby because their elo is so high his team gets all the noobs which he can't carry because in reality he is only maybe 30% better than someone half his elo, or plain old stacking with friends even though arguably this shouldn't even be a feature etc. etc.

The best server is the one with 50 player count imo because it actually gives those chaotic casual tf2 like game vibes with people not taking game seriously but that server is only active for maybe a few hours a day. Obivously it's less balanced with that many players but still the best fun you'll probably have.

Don't join any discord server.

NS2 community is basically your average modern multiplayer community. You got tons of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ pretending to be nice people aka reddit. While more oldshool games like sven coop, avp2 etc. have people using vulgar words constantly but they tend to be more honest and decent people in comparision.

As for playing it's way slower than avp2. Even starting a game can take a little time as you got tiny team sizes and you can't hop in a game like you can avp2. You often have to wait in spectator for a literal hour or longer to play.

As for gameplay loop you basically fight for map control and kill aliens/humans. Humans start a little stronger but aliens can stall with ambushes and eventually start pushing by buying alien lifeforms. All but the biggest aliens rely on evasion/ambush/deathball to win fights as they can't fight in equal terms. Humans can buy guns when pushing fortified hive locations and when you die a nearby human can pick up your gun unlike aliens who permanently lose expensive alien lifeforms.

Skill expression aside from teamwork and map knowledge for humans is positioning and aiming. The usual fps stuff except your main gun is a fast firing laser accuracy rifle with low bullet damage so good tracking is absolutely needed. Humans are rather immobile until jetpacks at least. For aliens they need movement skills mostly to effectively close in, damage and not die.

Funnily enough you'll improve faster as human playing against bots at kovaaks than against real players. Or just installing hax like every other high human elo/low alien elo totally legit player out there.

Regardless noob servers seems to be the most popular ones and they have smurfs. If you want to play this game to be a power fantasy alien it will take a little time to get used to high sensitivity gameplay of fade (and maybe lerk) to become that sick serial killer. But in the long run aliens are certainly easier to succeed as. They seem to dominate in all levels of play especially noobs have it hard against aliens.

The game's TTK is slower. A predator can just 1-2 shot a queen with his spear melee weapon by getting lucky headshot meanwhile there isn't even headshot in ns2. A drone can aim at marine's feet and slash him to pieces. In comparision in ns2 alien melee attacks take 3-4-5 hits to kill marines while marines need 2-3 shotgun shots to kill any alien that isn't the weakest one. You also got very tiny magazine sizes for humans and you'll have to constantly reload often resulting in your death. This is intended from balance perspective. Game is balance around aliens losing their super expensive lifeforms which is why ttk is slow and bullet counts are low.

Overall it takes a long while to learn game's mechanics, rules, numbers etc. and you'll be quickly disappointed once you found out how underwhelming stuff like minigun exosuits and onos a seemingly huge behemoth are. This game is all about grinding skills to smash people weaker than you or give up and smurf/cheat.

TLDR: no, it's not worth it. Requires too much commitment for a dead game with garbage community. stick to older games.

I like the game despite the high ping I have it's tough to get into but 'simple' once you know the little tricks.
